Industry Specific Labour Agreements

The Designated Area Migration Agreement, DAMA complements human resources strategies in states, territories and regions to help employers in some regions adapt to changing economic conditions. This agreement provides these employers with some flexibility based on their specific economic conditions and labour market. A fishing contract is the only way to enable employers in the fishing industry to hire foreign workers in the « cover » and « fish hand » trades. There are currently nine inter-professional agreements: employers must continue to demonstrate the continuing need for the labour market, rather than simply transferring temporary visa holders into permanent residence. Employers are also expected to have fulfilled all sponsorship obligations, including training and recruitment obligations, during their current and previous employment contracts. When an employment contract is approved, the employer must ensure that all foreign workers have sufficient knowledge of English: a large-scale migration agreement (DAMA) gives states, territories or regions the flexibility to respond to their unique economic and labour market conditions through an agreement-based framework. Under DAMA, employers can support skilled and skilled workers overseas in areas where skills and workers are in short supply. DAMas aim to ensure that employers hire Australians as a top priority and prioritize initiatives and strategies to facilitate the hiring and engagement of Australian workers. After implementation, employment contracts are usually in effect for five years and allow your clients to bring overseas employees for them.

In the meantime, however, interim changes are being made to existing agreements to avoid negative effects on businesses due to the changes made in March 2018, given the short time frames.
